Ne Obliviscaris was an opening act for Cradle of Filth’s 2016 Inquisitional Tourture, and when the tour stopped in Memphis, TN, I had the pleasure of attending the show. Up until that point, I had never even heard of the band, and little did I know, I was about to have my mind blown.

When the six piece band came walking out on stage, the long haired Aussie with a violin demanded my immediate attention. I had done just enough research beforehand to know that Ne Obliviscaris was an Australian prog/black metal band, but when I saw a violin on stage, I knew we were in for a treat.

The band’s music is a perfect combination of progressive metal and black metal. It has all the classically influenced technical goodies of progressive metal mixed with the vocal style, dark tones, and speed of black metal. The live violin just falls right into place with this combination. The style and tone of violinist Tim Charles really pushes their work to a new dimension, giving Ne Obliviscaris an epic signature sound. The clean vocals may take a little getting used to, but each song by the group is immense and powerful, rich and full of dynamic and grandeur.
