You Say God, and I say [Heaven Upside Down], A Timeline
Marilyn Manson is no stranger to being controversial and unpredictable, but with his highly anticipated “Say10” release, things have reached an entirely new level of – just weird. The music video teasers, the cryptic Instagram posts, the vague messages, the failed valentines day release, the album title change, they all have his fans buzzing, and the hype is rapidly building. In case you missed it, here’s a breakdown of Mr. Manson’s suspense building for Say10
“You say god, and I say say [when?]”
18 July 2016 – In an interview at the Alternative Press Music Awards, the shock rocker announced the band’s newest album “Say10” and revealed it would be released on Valentine’s Day 2017. Watch the video here.
September 2016 – Dazeddigital.com interviews Marilyn Manson, where he suggests that the album will be closer to the sounds of Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals than that of The Pale Emperor. He also describes the album as “by far the most thematic and over-complicated thing” he’s ever done.
8 November 2016 – Manson releases a video teaser of Say10 on election day. As promised, the sound and lyrics do resemble that of his late 90s and early 2000s music.
“Devil’s got a cut, like a slit in a cattle’s calf, Dollar sign snakes,
I’m all in the damned, Godless, fearless of the flood,
or the blood of the coming spring,
Something is shedding its scales,
Crying from the heat of the light, or the empty shell on the stage,
and cash is a poor man’s money,
You say ‘god’ and I say ‘say 10’”
The video also teases the same shocking theatrics of his early works. It depicts a beheading of a politician resembling then presidential candidate Donald Trump. It also shows Marilyn Manson tearing pages out of the Bible. See video here.
16 December 2016 – Manson posts on Instagram an image of sound waves captioned “This is the sounds of Say10”
16 January 2017 – Yet another weird instagram post. This one featuring a black & white image of Fellini captioned “When in Roma…ask Fellini.”
16 January 2017 – He takes to instagram with a filtered picture of a red hand with the caption “And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven…”
21 January 2017 – Black & White instagram video of his face dimly lit in the midst of smoke or fog. His caption: “Revelations come in 12…”
24 January 2017 – This one really put us all on the edge of our seats. Another instagram post, but this time from the set of a music video. It’s a plain image of a “Wet Paint” sign captioned “Get a job. That includes a boss, that reminds you that you are gonna get FIRED as a HAZARD. Or steal matches. 02/14/17 is coming in hot”
2 February 2017 – Closing in on the alleged valentine’s day release, his instagram features a video from the set of the Say10 music video with the caption “2 Samuel 16:9. ‘why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over now and cut off his head’. 10 defines the relatives size of things in the universe.” The video is a looped shot of the decapitated corpse of (presumably) Donald Trump.
2 February 2017 – Are you hype yet? A video clip that looks like something straight out of Holywood or Antichrist era is posted to his IG account. It features Manson in body and face paint (mostly black) moving in his signature eerie fashion. Underneath it is a quote: “’And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.’ Film by Agata Alexander”

22 March 2017 – After no valentine’s day release and a whole lot of silence, his instagram activity picks back up. This time, he’s releasing video clips from what appears to be a music video shot in the suburbs. The first one displays the double cross (or celebritarian cross) in a night sky. “6:19. the time has come.” Many speculate that 6.19 could be the release date, others think it is an ode to lyrics from his album “Eat me; Drink Me,” while the rest of us have accepted that we have no fucking clue what’s going on at this point.
30 March 2017 – Another clip of an empty street, buildings, and the double cross mounted on top of what looks to be a church, shot in a similar fashion as the last one. “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters.”
8 April 2017 – This clip looks very similar to the last one, but shot either just before sunset or sunrise. In the background, you can hear sirens followed by screaming. Captioned “Mercury Retrograde”
17 April 2017 – Captioned “Hisatrocitionics,” this video is shot from a moving vehicle. The car comes to a stop next to a street lamp, and the camera zooms in on a glowing double cross before panning to a hooded figure standing under the street lamp.
1 May 2017 – Breaking away from the common thread of the last several posts, Marilyn Manson’s Instagram contains a new video of a map-looking chart with a serpent in the center. Caption: “And then the Bat met the Serpent. Shhhhh.”
8 May 2017 – Marilyn Manson stumbles through an interview in which he reveals the album will be titled “Heaven Upside Down.” Say10 says goodbye to its working title. Watch the interview here.
